Did you know that one in five children ages 13–18 have or will have a serious mental illness but almost 10 years can pass between the onset of symptoms and intervention?

Here is a  fact sheet, produced by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), that provides essential information about this phenomenon to families, educators, and practitioners. Please note that although the statistics are alarming—suicide is the third-leading cause of death in youth ages 10–24, and 90 percent of those who committed suicide had an underlying mental illness—there are warning signs (severe mood swings, drastic behavior changes, drug or alcohol use) and ways parents and teachers can find the help kids need.
